The strength of local wisdom and high-quality raw materials processed by artisans across Indonesia has led to the production of high-economic-value products.
Bisnis.com, DENPASAR – Indonesia's handicraft export value reached US$916 million in 2021, an increase of 10.49% compared to 2020, when the export value was US$829 million. The Chairwoman of the National Handicraft Council (Dekranas), Wury Ma’ruf Amin, explained that the growth in Indonesian handicraft exports from various regions reflects the high quality of these products, which are competitive in the global market. Handicrafts such as woven fabrics, batik, and songket, which typically use local raw materials, are highly sought after in the global market, as evidenced by the increasing export trend each year.
"The strength of local wisdom and high-quality raw materials processed by artisans across Indonesia enables the creation of high-economic-value products. This is the key to Indonesian handicrafts competing in the global market. We are confident that handicraft exports will continue to rise,” Wury stated in Mangupura on Thursday, September 8, 2022.
According to Wury, the handicraft sector has also created 3.9 million jobs and contributed IDR 166 trillion to Indonesia's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Given the significant impact of the handicraft sector on the national economy, efforts must be made to strengthen it through artisan mentoring and easier access to financing. Strengthening the digital ecosystem is also crucial for expanding the reach of the handicraft sector. Wury emphasized that since the pandemic, digital platforms have become essential for artisans to grow their businesses.
"Strengthening digitalization through partnerships with various platforms, such as WhatsApp, is crucial for MSMEs to expand their market reach,” she said.
Dekranas, together with the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, has partnered with WhatsApp to expand the network of handicraft entrepreneurs and MSMEs in Indonesia. The Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs, Teten Masduki, stated that efforts to modernize the handicraft sector are continuously being made through ongoing mentoring, facilitating Business Identification Numbers (NIB), and digitalization. The government also provides access to banking capital for craft industry players to help their businesses grow.
"Collaboration with Dekranas is crucial in the effort to modernize Indonesia's handicraft industry. We are committed to jointly developing and transforming craft industry players from the informal to the formal sector, from unbankable to bankable, and ultimately elevating their business levels,” said Teten.
